5 Questions to ask a Dealer When Shopping for a Tractor

Oct. 30 2023 Miscellaneous By Bill

When in the market for a new tractor, a tour of your dealer’s showroom and sales lot are a great place to start. You can also tour the service department and talk with the manager there. In addition to your overall impression of a dealer, be sure to ask lots of questions. Not only do you want to take advantage of your dealer’s extensive knowledge base, you’ll also want to make sure you ask pertinent questions to help you get the best tractor for your specific needs. Here are a few examples.

1. CAN I TRY IT OUT?

When you find a tractor you like, don't be afraid to give it a good once-over. Drive it, feel the controls to see if they are comfortable and move smoothly. Don't forget to adjust the seat to your liking to see if it will be comfortable for long periods of time. How loud is the tractor? How much does it vibrate? How fast do the lift and loader move?

2. CAN I SEE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT?

When at the dealership, ask to see the service department and shop. Does it look professional and productive? Would you trust this shop? Ask to see their parts department and their inventory - how much do they keep on-hand? Does it look organized and professional? Does that department make you feel good about or gain trust in the dealership?

3. CAN I ASK SOME QUESTIONS?

Always have your list of questions, and don't be afraid to have a long list. Does the motor require anything special- does it have to regen or does it Use DEF fluid? How much more maintenance is a cab tractor? Should I be concerned about glass breakage or A/C problems in a cab? Do I need to put tire sealant in the tires? Should I add a canopy?

4. WILL THIS TRACTOR MATCH MY USAGE REQUIREMENTS?

First decide what you want to do with the tractor. Then decide what size implements you will need to get it done. Then you can decide on what size and what horsepower you will need. HP is not always everything, Lift capacities and overall weight have a large bearing on whether it will carry hay or large loads without issue.

5. WHAT KIND OF PACKAGE DEALS ARE AVAILABLE?

Do you want or need a trailer? What implements are you looking for? What kind of options does this tractor have? Sometimes more technology and electronics can bring service headaches in the future. Do I need these options like Power Shuttle or a cab or do I just want something simple? Will you be using it for harsh clearing applications? Look at the underside and see where the filters and noses and fuel tank are located. Make sure it will be protected from logs or brush hitting underneath Also a cab can be damaged easily by flying debris or driving under trees.

Sure, all dealers are in the business of selling tractors, but a good dealer’s main focus is to sell you the RIGHT tractor for your needs – after all, they’re looking to make a customer for life. Your dealer is a wealth of information and a fantastic resource.

Be sure to describe your needs in detail, and they will help guide you to choosing the best tractor for your situation.
